Is Personal Branding at Work necessary
As you keep thinking what personal branding means, let me introduce two familiar concepts, which you might have forgotten
1. Mathew Effect : As simple as to say “ The rich Get Richer and the poor get Poorer”. The name was derived from the biblical Gospel of Mathew. The concept is that of monetary Fame or Status of a person. How they achieved the position is what we will discuss. You might be wondering how Mathew effect has a relation with personal branding. Continue reading and you will know
2. Imposter Syndrome : The second concept means a person with internal fear of doubt. It can be a person selling a product doubts the quality of the product or a person who is afraid to admit confidently that he is talented. So should we rephrase the Mathew effect concept and tell
The Brave Get richer and the Coward get poorer.
As you work over the years you know that you are not only gaining experience but also reputation, which adds value to your company. Does the company ever admitted this or have given you the credit for your reputation? The answer is in most scenarios the answer is NO, because it is a combination of your work experience with the Company’s brand on top of your name.
In this situation you the employee is the IMPOSTER, because there are 2 situations, either you be Brave to speak up Loud that its you or you Fear not to say this at all for fear of losing your job.
This is the situation where most people look for a change in Job for betterment, the company might do all what is necessary to satisfy you with better package and cover up your branding with The Company’s Brand. It hardly worked out in most cases.
For example, in a proven study posted on the internet reveals that on social media, an employees Branded content did 30% much better that the organization’s Post.
Saying you are reputed Too Loud is as wrong as Not saying it.
Lets relate the terms again
Imposter – The employee
Rewriting Mathew effect again The company gets Richer and the Imposter remains an employee
So your Personal Branding got hidden under the company’s brand.
What is the way out ?
Lets take a look back on to your joining date and the first 3 months of your job. What did you do. Did you call your manager and took help from your mentors to scroll up the ladder. Now whom do you have? A set of your “personal brand” admirers and learners who seek your guidance. This is the trump card
When you joined your job you took efforts to adapt into a team, now its time you build a community for people to barge into your community. Social media is the key player here. Just be smart enough about what media you use when building a personal brand. Its time to tag yourself.
Self-promote yourself, rephrase your business card, add a tag line to your new community, let the community speak for you and the company will turn back to you tacitly. You Speak up engagements in community will over run the company and turn tables in your favor.
Remember over talking is as dangerous as staying tacit.
Remember over amplification will Blast away.
Remember staying quiet without doing anything is a suicide
That’s It! It not a job change strategy
This is more so like a professional manner of Gossip with you and your community and let the community take its turn and promote you as yourself. The entire concept of the Scene is to make your company understand the effectiveness of your value to the company and reap the rewards mutually.
But now many make a mistake is assuming or prejudging them as a personal brand just because they self-realized it or just because they where appreciated. It does not work that way. The reputation has to be measurable to qualify. How we can do that? Will KPI help…Lets see in another post soon.
